Our History
Scratch beneath the surface of these old stonewalls, and you will find all kinds of history and stories. The Lower House is set in the heart of our village – welcoming people from far-flung corners of the world as well as our neighbours.
Ciaran grew up above the pub but left home to study and then embarked on a career that brought him around the world but eventually to London where he met Vicki. Ciaran and Vicki McCausland left London after careers in Finance to return home and raise a family. Taking over the pub was certainly a big change of life but they were determined to make Ireland their home.
They were both keen to grow the business and it was in 2019, they finally set about their renovation project. As a rural pub, their priority was to retain the pubs role in the village but they could also see the demand for something more – so as part of the renovation they created an accommodation offering.
Now they have a beautiful pub with seven bedrooms in total over the two upper levels of the house and one on the ground floor, each with a dedicated lounge and kitchen area. It provides a slightly different model to the hotel experience but offers a place you can stay in a small village with the pub below and the The Brewer’s House restaurant only metres away.
When you visit us in Donaghmore, you can be sure of some local chat, a comfortable chair, a fine selection of drinks and and as always, over the last 200 years, – a little of the unexpected too!
